Marine Conservation

In 1978 Bob joined the Underwater Conservation Programme and through his collaborative work with many others this evolved into the formation of the Marine Conservation Society in 1983.

His work at Marine Conservation Society (MCS) involved a wide range of topics from marine protected areas, the status of the North Sea, sewage and toxic chemical pollution (e.g. TBT) and marine fish farming. He was the Manager and Head of Conservation at MCS until he left at the end of 1992. His work since then has involved encouraging a wide range of programmes including the establishment of the Shark Trust, work on Integrated Coastal Zone Management and marine spatial planning, marine litter and plastic pollution, and helping to drive work on the Marine and Coastal Access Act in 2000’s. He has organised conferences and projects on the North Sea, Wash, marine aggregates, fisheries, offshore wind impacts and the ecosystem approach. His book, Marine Conservation, People, Ideas and Actions (2018) reflects the development of marine conservation through his the eyes of those of his co-workers since the 1970s.
